1987Early life

Born on the solstice.

Lucien was born on the summer solstice in Saint-Aurel.
It is a small town on a stretch of pale limestone coast that appears on some maritime charts and not on others.4

His mother worked as a hydrographer, surveying the seabed for the regional port authority.
His father is not mentioned in any interview.
He was raised largely by his grandmother, a piano tuner, who took him on jobs from the age of six.

He credits her with his first understanding of groove.

"She'd hit one key and wait until the whole room agreed with it.
That's the job.
That's still the job."5
1998The record

A box left on the harbour front.

Aged eleven, he found a box of records left outside a closed shop on the harbour front.
One of them was an unlabelled twelve inch with a catalogue number that matches no known label.
He describes it as his first record.

He says he still owns it.
He has never played it for anyone.6

The year 1998 recurs throughout his work and is often cited as the start of his active period.
No music was released.

At school he played bass in a band that, by his own account, "had no songs, only a tempo."
It taught him that a bassline is the only instrument that can make a room decide something together.5

EducationUnfinished

Sound in stone rooms.

Lucien studied architectural acoustics at a technical university he has not named.
He specialised in how sound behaves in stone and concrete rooms.
He did not complete the degree.

A former lecturer, interviewed in 2026, recalled a student who "spent two years measuring the reverb of an empty car park and then submitted a bassline as his thesis."7

The university has no record of him.
The lecturer stands by the story.

2009 to 2016Small rooms

Learning what a room wants.

His early years as a producer are poorly documented.
He worked as a sound engineer for venues that no longer exist.
He tuned systems for other people's nights and played his own material only in the hours after closing.

A number of tracks from this period circulated as unlabelled files.
Several were later identified as his by ear.8

"Learning what a room wants before it knows."
2017 to 2024The long room

The fifth floor of a four floor building.

In 2017 Lucien moved into a studio on the fifth floor of a building on the Saint-Aurel seafront.
The building has four floors.9

He stayed there for seven years.
He produced most of what he now calls "the collection", a large body of finished records spanning house, tech house, minimal and melodic material.
One rule holds it together.

"Groove first, texture after."10

He released nothing during this period.
Asked why, he said the records were finished but the listeners weren't.2

2024 to 2026The turn

He reached the end. Then he turned around.

In 2024 he reached the end of the collection, the point where there was nothing left to add.1
In 2026 he began releasing it through SoundCloud and Bandcamp.
No schedule.
No campaign.
No particular order.

"It has all already happened.
You're just choosing where to start."3

Critics have read this as a release strategy, a philosophy, or a joke.
Lucien has confirmed all three.11

2027 onwardSID

Already out.

In 2027 Lucien announced SID, an imprint for the collection and, later, for other producers "who have also finished."
Its first catalogue number was SID-000, described in the press release as "already out."12

His first live appearance is dated to 2029, on a rooftop in Saint-Aurel, to roughly two hundred people.
Many attendees say they remember a Lucien performance before that date.
Lucien has not disputed this.13

By 2031 the collection was widely considered complete in public form.
He kept releasing records.
Asked how, he said the collection was complete.
He had simply not finished handing it back.14

SoundMusical style

Rooms the groove walks through.

His music is built on groove: the interaction of kick, bass and swing.
Texture, melody and harmony come afterwards and stay subordinate to it.

Tempos sit between 124 and 128 BPM.
Low end is warm and mono.
Hi hats are rarely identical from bar to bar.
Chords tend to arrive slightly later than expected.10

Reviewers have called the records "familiar in a way that cannot be placed" and "music you've heard in a room you haven't been to yet."815

He resists genre labels.
House, tech and minimal are "rooms the groove walks through, not addresses it lives at."3
A track should sound like it was made by a person who was in the room.

ImagePublic image

Usually checking something behind the camera.

He is almost never photographed looking at the camera.
He says he is "usually checking something behind it."16

A pattern of thin matte black lines runs from his right collarbone up the right side of his neck.
It is generally described as a tattoo.
He has never confirmed or denied this.
The same geometry appears in his artwork and, in later years, in the architecture of the places he is photographed in.
He has not commented on that either.16

He wears the same things in most photographs: a heavy off white T-shirt, black trousers, pale sneakers.
He has never been photographed in a suit.

NowPersonal life

Lives in Saint-Aurel. Or did. Or will.

Sources differ on where he lives.4
He does not discuss relationships.
He keeps a single light on in the studio at all times and has never explained why.
He does not own a car.

He says the sea near his home "has moved slightly" since his childhood.
The hydrographic charts agree with him.4

He does not use social media personally.
His accounts are described as "maintained."17

07

Whether the collection is finished.
Lucien says yes.
Lucien is still releasing it.

In his words

Quotations.

"Groove first, texture after.
The bassline is the soul."

"There's nothing left in it for me.
There's everything in it for you."

"Take your time.
I did."

"No artificial ingredients were harmed."
